What you will be doing
The refuge was declared a RAMSAR site in 1991 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2007. The biodiversity of this site has attracted global attention for more than 35 years. It is possible to observe endangered wetland species such as the Jabirú bird, the Atlantic Tarpon, and the prehistoric Gaspar Fish. Due to its importance as a source of food and nesting, it is one of the best places in Costa Rica for bird watching.
Our tour begins by embarking in Guatuso, a rural town, from where we navigate the riverbed to the Caño Negro Refuge, where an experienced guide will show you various species such as sloths, three types of monkeys, caimans, lizards, bats, birds, and a variety of flora typical of wetlands. At the end of this boat safari tour, our last stop will be at the house of Don Abelino and Doña Wendy where we will share a traditional lunch to learn more about the culture and especially Costa Rican gastronomy

About your host
Jacamar Naturalist ToursWe started operations in 1996, in La Fortuna and San Carlos, and was a pioneer in the tourist development of the area, offering some of the first walks to the Arenal Volcano in an organised way. The experience gained through these years allows Jacamar Naturalist Tours to integrate and train some of the best naturalist guides in the country and explore the best tourist destinations with them. As we mature and expand, we maintained the same philosophy of sustainable tourism in each destination, always making a concerted effort to promote the conservation of nature and culture.
For every trip booked, Kodama Travel donates £1 to Just One Tree to restore our forests and the ocean.
