Overview
Venture beyond the well-trodden paths of Cocora Valley to uncover one of Colombia’s best-kept secrets—La Carbonera, a vast, untouched reserve where towering Wax Palms, the national tree of Colombia, thrive in their natural ecosystem. Unlike the scattered palms seen in pastures, here they grow in dense forests, protected from deforestation and surrounded by an astonishingly diverse cloud forest.

What you will be doing
Your journey begins in Salento, where a scenic countryside drive leads to the entrance of Cocora Valley. Along the way, you'll follow an ancient trade route once used by Indigenous communities and later transformed into a vital passage during the Spanish conquest. This historic trail, known as El Camino Real, played a crucial role in shaping new settlements and fostering regional development.
As you set off on the hike, the contrast between landscapes becomes evident. The first stretch reveals rolling fields where cattle ranching has limited the palms to isolated sentinels standing tall among the pastures. But as you continue, the scenery transforms—lush cloud forests emerge, wrapped in mist and teeming with life. The humidity creates the perfect conditions for orchids and bromeliads to flourish, decorating the treetops in an explosion of colour.
Crossing La Línea, the natural border between Quindío and Tolima, the altitude climbs, offering sweeping views of the Andean mountains. The trail leads to Las Cruces, a traditional peasant farm where you can witness the rural way of life that has persisted for generations. Eventually, you’ll arrive at La Carbonera, a breathtaking expanse of 900 hectares of protected forest—home to over 600,000 adult Wax Palms, a staggering number compared to the small clusters found in Cocora.
